House Prices – Emergency Measures Needed – IPAV

Commenting on the latest CSO House Price Index for March IPAV, the Institute of Professional Auctioneers & Valuers, said it’s no surprise that prices continue to rise, given the paucity of supply of homes, with the higher double digit increases taking place outside of Dublin where prices are lower, much lower in many areas than in the capital.

Pat Davitt, IPAV’s Chief Executive said, however, it was good to see a year-on-year increase of 9.1% in the volume of purchases.

“That said, it’s a drop in the ocean.  In terms of overall supply we’re in the last chance saloon as to getting housing policy to support home building and tackling the various obstacles to building homes.

“Whatever package of new measures come from Government must include emergency planning rules, for a period of time,” he said.

He said increasingly home ownership is becoming the preserve of those with means, on high salaries or those lucky enough to have family financial support.

Ends.
